Each artist receives a grant of NOK 5,000 for the full four-week stay. Travel expenses are reimbursed up to NOK 3,500 per person. Accommodation and studio space are provided free of charge.

The main farmhouse, a 350 m² building, is available exclusively to the artists during their stay. Originally built in the 18th century, it was fully renovated 2027.

The house is fully furnished and spread over two floors, offering:

  • 3 double bedrooms

  • 3 single bedrooms

  • 2 bathrooms

  • A large hall

  • 3 living rooms

  • A dining room and a spacious kitchen, both with seating for 12

The rooms are shared among the artists, allowing space for both privacy and community.

Studio

AiR Green

1 spot for 2 months.

The studio residency is for one artist and has a duration of two months. The residency is in the recently rehabilitated (2021) Sommerfjøset (“Summer barn”) on Søndre Green farm. The barn has been converted into a studio apartment with all facilities, and with a good work space for various types of art production. Other workspaces on the farm will also be available.

The stay includes a grant of NOK 10,000 and travel expenses are covered by up to NOK 3,500. Accommodation and studio space are provided free of charge.

Note: The stay is personal (you can not bring family, partner etc.)

The residency is at Søndre Green farm, next to the lake Krøderfjorden in the municipality of Krødsherad. It has its own small island, rowboat and beach for swimming.

Beautiful hiking terrain is close at hand: the hill Greensåsen has a hiking trail, a lean-to shelter and a cabin with sleeping facilities. There’s also a trail from the farm itself to Krøderen Kro (1½ km distance), which serves homemade and locally-sourced food. Hike 16 km and you’re above the treeline.

Noresund (the closest village, 3½ km from AiR Green) has shops, petrol stations, a doctor, municipal administration, a hotel and cafés. There is public transportation (a buss) to Søndre Green Farm (sporadic schedule). There is also a bicycle/walking path from the farm to Noresund, along the lakeside. Bicycles can be borrowed at the farm. The farm is about 90 km from Oslo, a 2-hour bus ride via Hønefoss or Drammen.

Welcome to Air green

What air green offers

In addition to excellent accommodations in a historic, newly-restored farmhouse, the artists have the opportunity to work in large spaces in several of the farm buildings:

‘Hovedhuset’ (main farmhouse): workroom in ‘salen’ (the large salon) (40m2).

‘Bryggerhuset’ (brewing house): workroom / wet room (40m2).

Barn / Outbuilding:
Gallery “Høytørka” – 3 meters wide, 16 meters long, and 4.8 meters high. The space has been renovated using OSB panels.

Library:
Under the staircase in “Høytørka,” a rich and diverse library has been collected and is available for all participants to use.

AiR Green provides good conditions for different approaches to artistic practice, for reflection and in-depth study, for working on your own in the main house and/or using the natural surroundings.

You can also immerse yourself in textile craft through the farm’s rich collection of vertical looms, flat looms and other relevant equipment. The farm’s Spælsau (Old Norwegian Short Tail Landrace sheep) provide wool for spinning and dyeing. The local nature provides herbs and plants for dyeing wool.

Key to AiR Green is the encounter between different artistic practices with the textile as a common starting point. The four artists who are juryed into each residency will live together and will be given the opportunity to share and learn from each other.

Each artist must share his or her practice in the form of an Open Weekend or Minifestival at the farm in the last weekend of the residency and / or give a presentation and an artist talk at Buskerud Kunstsenter or SOFT galleri in Oslo.

Artists who wish to give lectures, workshops for children or adults, or engage in other forms of outreach are encouraged to do so. This is voluntary and only if it is a regular part of your practice. Compensation will be provided if funding is available.

Equipment

There are several looms at AiR Green, two flat looms, 120 cm, and 150 cm all assembled and ready. Additionally there are two looms of the type Oppstadvev. The first one is 300 cm long in metal, currently without tread. The second is 150 cm wide, made of wood, with treads, but needs to be assembled. At last, we have a small frame loom ca 60 cm wide. There’s also a possibility to make your own loom. Spinning wheels and some wools are available to use.

Sewing machines currently available are a Husqvarna Viking Tribute,  and an older Yamata.

We also have a damping iron and a room for textile coloring.

In addition we have internet, photoshop and a printer that you can use as well as a small library.

See the full material list here

Please note that AiR Green program is an independent artist residency; no instruction is available, and experience is required to operate looms, sewing machines and other equipment available.
